Doosan Power Systems - Power with customers at the heart of development

Covering everything from thermal generation to nuclear and renewable, Korean engineering giant Doosan is a world leader in the delivery of technologies, products and asset management services to the global power sector.

Doosan's ability to take on customers' large-scale engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects makes it a company that stands out in its field.

The Mundra 'ultra mega power plant' (UMPP) project in India, a coal-fired supercritical thermal power plant which became the largest facility of its kind in India when completed in 2013, is just one example of Doosan's ability to deliver on such ventures. Located in Gujarat state, Mundra boasts a combined power output of 4,000MW, equivalent to the output of four nuclear plants and sufficient to meet the energy requirements of four million people. Having secured the $1-billion contract with Tata Power in September 2007, Doosan managed the entire EPC process for Mundra, as well as supplying the five 800MW boilers, along with major environmental facilities.

Upon completion of the project, Tata Power's CEO Anil Sardana said that Mundra would "go down in India's plant engineering history as a monumental success", and went on to praise Doosan for the company's unwavering support and commitment throughout the project. This praise reflects Doosan's customer-centric business approach, which puts the needs of customers at the forefront of product and service development.

Boilers and beyond

In 2013, the company established its new Global Boiler R&D Centre, which combines the expertise of Doosan and its subsidiaries, including Doosan Babcock. The centre's remit is to pioneer steam generation through technological development focused on customer and market needs, ultimately supporting Doosan's vision to become the leading-edge R&D specialist for boiler plant and emissions control technologies.

Its portfolio of core boiler products and technologies includes ultra-supercritical pulverised coal boilers, sub-critical circulating fluidised bed boilers and environmental emissions control technologies such as flue-gas cleaning and selective catalytic reduction, as well as retrofit, conversion and service technologies.

Part of Doosan's R&D focus will be on using data and customer feedback from each project to develop additional boiler capabilities, achieving valuable technical improvements that will ultimately benefit customers, for example, in the design of next-generation supercritical pulverised coal and CFB boiler technologies.

But it is not just global boiler leadership that Doosan has its eye on. The company is also serious about developing its turbine technology to provide customers with a greater choice of model line, as well as the best performance available on the market.

Presently, Doosan supplies steam turbines of 100MW-1,100MW for thermal power plants and 600MW-1,450MW for nuclear power plants, as well as industrial steam turbines, gas turbines and hydro turbines. To support its ambitions to become a top-tier global supplier of turbine technologies, the company has charged its Czech subsidiary, Doosan Škoda Power, with leading steam turbine development efforts, drawing on a heritage in turbine innovation that dates back more than 100 years.

Doosan's broad range of capabilities and its investment in developing innovative technologies and products to serve its customers is further complemented by a range of after-build, maintenance and asset management services. With an offering like this, Doosan is in excellent shape to help customers around the world rise to the challenges of future power generation.

Flexible steam generation

Globally acknowledged as a leader in steam generation, we continually invest in developing technology that allows us to adapt to the changing marketplace and customer needs. Our Global Boiler R&D Centre focuses on providing the latest boiler and burner technologies, to ensure our products are built to respond to our customers' often-challenging fuel requirements.

Doosan Lentjes' circulating fluidised bed (CFB) technologies cater to both the new build and major plant upgrade markets, allowing us to support our customers around the world. CFB boilers offer reliable generation for the most difficult fuels with more affordable capital and operating costs than conventional technologies. Our CFB technology incorporates high-efficiency cyclone and fluidised bed heat exchangers (FBHE) for the combustion of a broad range of fuels.

Turbo-generators

Our world-class turbo-generator technology from Doosan Škoda Power offers efficiency and reliability. Our turbine systems are precision engineered and tested to deliver maximum efficiency, durability and reliability. We deliver advanced turbo-generator systems in harmony with your power requirements, offering a flexible range of units producing from 20MW to 1,250MW, providing efficient, low-cost, high-quality steam turbo-generation. Our turbines are at work in power generation plants around the world, as well as serving a vast range of industrial uses, from manufacturing and petrochemicals, to municipal waste and biomass incineration plants.

Waste to energy

At Doosan, we help our customers convert more than nine million tonnes of waste into energy every year. Combining proven grate-fired technology from Doosan Lentjes with industry-leading turbines from Doosan Škoda Power, we provide 'chute to stack' solutions that make us the perfect partner for our customers' waste-to-energy needs.

Nuclear

Our nuclear manufacturing pedigree extends back to the birth of the industry more than 50 years ago. Decades of testing and development expertise help us constantly refine our manufacturing and procurement to the highest global standards.

The rich heritage of the Babcock name is associated with an investment in people, facilities and tooling that has supported the development of the UK nuclear industry for over half a century. Today, Doosan Babcock's nuclear expertise spans nuclear newbuild, including concept and feasibility studies, design, manufacture, procurement, site installation and commissioning, as well as maintenance, specialist inspection technologies, plant-life extension, decommissioning and waste-handling services.
