Nagra is the Swiss National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste. Founded in 1972 and financed by the producers of nuclear waste in Switzerland (nuclear energy generation, medical, research and industrial applications), Nagra,
is responsible for the preparation and realisation of geologic repositories for all categories of Swiss radioactive waste
operates the national database of waste inventory and advises producers on waste conditioning.
The know-how and experience in the field of radioactive waste management accumulated by Nagra over the last 35 years is recognised as a valuable resource for other national waste management programmes, as well as for technical applications outside the nuclear area.
With the establishment of ISP, the Department of International Services and Projects, in 1997, Nagra offers a broad spectrum of support services ranging from strategic programme planning, specification of waste inventories, site selection, characterisation and evaluation to repository design, safety case development, safety analyses and public communication. Our facilities include the Grimsel underground research test site, which is a rock laboratory located in the Swiss Alps operating since 1984 as a centre of excellence and a technical platform for international cooperation (www.grimsel.com).
