Westinghouse Signs Teaming Agreement

15 February 2013

Westinghouse Electric Company and ClydeUnion Pumps, an SPX brand, have signed a teaming agreement to market jointly the ClydeUnion Pumps Turbine Water Lubricated (CUP-TWL) pump in an arrangement that will include new plant applications and operating nuclear power plants worldwide.

Pressurised water reactors (PWR) use the CUP-TWL pump as the turbine-driven auxiliary feed water (TDAFW) pump, and in boiling water reactors (BWR) as the reactor core isolation cooling (RCIC) pump. The ClydeUnion Pumps technology offers substantial advantages; does not require AC or DC power, can pump hot process fluids (>100°C), does not use flammable lubrication, has excellent transitory response, and a smaller footprint and fewer parts are required.

"This teaming agreement provides Westinghouse global nuclear BWR and PWR customers with more options for products and services that will enhance safety across the global fleet," said Doug Holderbaum, director, Westinghouse Post-Fukushima Safety Products and Services. "The CUP-TWL extended coping package is part of Westinghouse's larger effort to provide its global customers with products and services that enhance safety while addressing lessons learned from Fukushima."

The CUP-TWL pump makes it possible for a plant to achieve system operation without supporting AC or DC electrical power, disassembling equipment or making emergency modifications. This capability is critical for plants that require extended coping duration for loss of AC power. Westinghouse also can provide a complete package of permanent hardware and system modifications to allow local, manual operation.

Originally developed for maritime applications, the CUP-TWL pump has undergone full nuclear quality assurance, since it is considered a safety-related pump for both PWRs and BWRs. Additionally, the pump carries several accreditations, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) "N" stamp.

Nuclear power plants currently using the CUP-TWL pump include PWRs in the UK, Sweden, the Republic of Korea and China, and BWRs in Taiwan. More than 400 pump units currently are being used in both nuclear and non-nuclear services worldwide.
Other products and services Westinghouse offers that address Fukushima lessons learned include SHIELD passive thermal shutdown seal; FLEX assessment, planning and implementation; guided wave radar spent fuel pool level instrumentation; seismic and flooding hazards evaluation, including seismic probabilistic risk assessment (PRA); hydrogen control solutions; containment filtered vent solutions; and plant-specific implementation aspects.
